I really enjoyed seeing Blake transform as a character and experiencing Tibetan culture through his eyes! Both an adventure story and a lesson in reality vs. illusion, this novel is excellent reading for adults, too. Wonderful details and descriptions, and the character Ang really added another layer of depth to the story. My only critique is that it ended so suddenly - I would have liked a little bit more explanation of the mind-creates-illusion idea, as this was a central theme.
I absolutely love reading about Mr. Everest and couldn't wait to learn more in this book. To my surprise I followed followed a different journey but could not have loved it more. With every new part if Blake's journey the reader is privileged to be in a world few see. The descriptions are so vivid I felt like I was watching a movie. His journey was external and internal. The ending was as wonderful as the whole story. Hope some day there is a sequel.
Ellis Nelson writes as one who knows of being in the land of snows, of being with the Himalayans, Sherpas, Monks, Lamas and hence the beginning of an amazing life changing experience by Blake McCormack, Ellis Nelson’s main character in this fascinating novel. I came upon this amazing story by chance and did not even read the book description. The title alone was compelling. The story begins with the angst of a young 17 year old boy, Blake, who is angry at his parents. Blake is forced by his physician father to accompany him to the Himalayans to help at the base camp at Mount Everest, but here the story takes a life changing turn for Blake and then the real story begins. Into the Land of Snows takes the reader into a world so different, so beautifully challenging in its vision of life that the reader is drawn-in completely. So strong is the vision presented in this book it may even change the being within you.
The novel Into the Land of Snows was a continual adventure/journey of protagonist Blake McCormack in the rugged Himalayas. It's a story of discovery, not only of the Himalayas but also of himself. Ellis Nelson's storytelling and descriptions were outstanding. I could picture everything. The Buddhist practices and folklore made the book more alluring. I've already recommended this book to others.
This is much more than a superb coming-of-age novel. At one level it is a Bildungsroman about a sixteen year-old American boy's learning about life, and the truth about his parents' divorce while on a trekking tour in the Himalayas with an experienced Sherpa guide. But the book is also about the purity of the high mountains and the life lessons one learns when confronting oneself and one's fears at these elevated heights. On a third plane, this is also a book about Buddhism, a book that teaches without preaching. I was attracted to this book after reading an article on the author's blog and can recommend it without reservation to anyone who sees life as a magical journey of growth and discovery.
I love novels about self discovery; in fact, I just wrote one myself, but Into the Land of Snows, by Ellis Nelson, is awash with discoveries of every shape and size one's human mind could imagine. Yes, this is a "YA" novel, but to call it a cross-over, or even transcendent, would not be an exaggeration. I began "working with" young people when I still was one of them, and from church programs, to inner NYC drug rehab programs, to teenagers who simply walked into my garage office, introduced themselves, and pointed to my chess board while asking if I'd like to play, for 61 years they have just appeared in my life, uninvited, as if there were a neon sign over my head blinking "This guy will hear you." So when I tell you that the novel's protagonist is real, please understand that young men like Blake McCormack have eaten pizza at my house, educated me about Life, the Universe, and Everything, and taught me their favorite games.
Blake's home life is badly shaken by divorce, and like most intelligent young people, he feels resentful and ill-informed. Teenagers strike out relentlessly, attempting to convince themselves (and their parents) that their level of practical and cosmic understanding is adequate, and Blake is no exception, but what drew me to this young man was (despite his bitterness and his hormonally charged and emotionally turbulent adolescence) his refusal to shut down when confronted with new, and even unlikely, information. My daughter, a loving and open-hearted only child, grew up with a life-long string "big brothers" she nicknamed "lost boys." She saw them attach themselves to me under the most unlikely of circumstances, and even today, with five children of her own, she knows exactly which of them eventually shut themselves away in an intellectually barren box, and which one's grew through their fears and climbed out of box after box that offered the illusion of safety and stability. Ellis Nelson shows us the highly entertaining and profoundly enlightening path of a "lost boy" who is intellectually and emotionally brave enough to never to be truly lost.
Every moment in this multi-faceted novel was a joyful delight...storytelling as it should be. I have observed while reading many customer reviews on , that some folks read and review books for the same reason they seem to live their lives as an opportunity to nit-pick. They are, by-in-large, perpetually disgruntled. Others, like myself, just love experiencing a great story. Into the Land of Snows is definitely for folks in that last category...and each of my five amazing grand kids will eventually get their own copy!
