This is the 1931 Harvard edition, and it is totally classic! Not a measly, low-ink, 1.2 x 8.4 x 10.9 paper-back photo-stat or cheap reprint on low-quality paper, but a manly 2 x 9 x 12 (give or take a sixteenth or two, depending where and how you measure) two-hander. Beautiful cover, simple though some may consider it. The paper quality was par for the time, but that is still better than the paper being used in most books today.Prefaced with a list of illustrations, a list of abbreviations, and a valuable chronological table, the main content consists of three Parts. Part I covers the registrars and decrees, shying away from the Greek not in the least. Part II lists the Archons according to variant lists with the clarity and thoroughness that was more common in that era than in this. Lovers of the complexities of calendrics will love Part III, whose chapters are divided into treatments of the eight-year cycles before Meton, the nineteen year cycles of Meton, the seventy-six year cycles of Kallippos, and the three hundred and four year cycle of Hipparchos. Appendices cover "The Official Order of the Tribes in the Hellenistic Age," dates in Eusebius, other calendars and Archon lists. Twenty-seven tables provide more information on chronologies and variant lists. 567 pages with Arabic numerals and 18 pages with Roman numerals.
This is not, however, a book of endless, meaningless, bone-dry lists. The majority of the text is Dinsmoor. The scholar painstakingly provides historical background, foreground, and commentary of contemporary events affecting Greek politics and their recording. Professor Dinsmoor explains how astronomical calculations were made, why they were made the way they were, how nearly they were able to perfect the calendar; who made certain discovers and who offered alternate views; what were the titles and roles - king, philosopher, secretary, sculptor, aphetes, paidotribes, epimeletes, hieropoios, pompostoloi, and many others. He points out where a name is either dubious or even "fictitious" (e.g., "Philon I"). You are not going to be breezing through this in a single semester. I do not believe a serious student of detail re ancient Athens can be happy without this book in hand or on a nearby stand.
